BTM33-Camp Southern Ground

Show Summary
On this episode, we have a conversation with Jake Dukes, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives with Camp Southern Ground, and Chris Murphy, a Combat-Wounded Marine that credits Camp Southern Ground's military and veterans program with a life-altering experience.

About Today’s Guest

Jake Dukes
joined the Camp Southern Ground team in March of 2018. He is a leadership coach, speaker and author who served for many years on executive teams of large churches focused on developing staff and overseeing campus operations. Now he uses his unique blend of business and ministry experience to develop future strategy for Camp Southern Ground and help facilitate a strong leadership culture among the staff. Jake brings his passion to every project and he’s not afraid to help teams break free from the rules they’ve inherited and push past the status quo. Jake lives in Senoia with his wife Jackie and four daughters.

Chris “Murph” Murphy served nearly seventeen years of active duty as a Marine, deploying into combat zones multiple times in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and instructing during his non-deployable time in service. After being medically retired in 2014, Murph has focused on peer-to-peer mentoring through an organization he founded to serve veterans in life after combat. Life took an unexpected turn along the path and he found himself involved in veteran programs at Camp Southern Ground in Fayetteville, Georgia. In a series of events that equal “you wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he and his family now live ten minutes outside of the camp, continuing to support the wellbeing of veterans after military service

PsychArmor Resource of the Week
The PsychArmor resource for this week is the course Posttraumatic Growth After Loss. Suicide loss is a complicated grief journey for many, but with the right support, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) has observed that suicide loss survivors are uniquely poised for posttraumatic growth. Join Dr. Shauna Springer representing TAPS as she discusses how the TAPS’ Suicide Postvention Model’s third phase, posttraumatic growth, has affected one particular survivor. Through telling the story of TAPS Peer Mentor and retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 3, Jon Ganues, Sr., “Posttraumatic Growth After Loss” explains how opportunities for growth are possible even after devastation. At the end of the course, you will be able to: 1.) Describe the concept of posttraumatic growth as a potential outcome of a healthy healing journey after suicide loss and 2.) Identify two specific ways that survivors may experience positive growth in their lives following suicide loss. You can take a look at this course by checking out the link here: https://psycharmor.org/courses/posttraumatic-growth-after-loss/
