PsychArmor, Camp Corral and DAV (Disabled American Veterans) release new course to support youth caregivers in military and Veteran families

San Diego, CA- Camp Corral and PsychArmor launched the second course in a two-part Life Tools for Mil Kids series with the support of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Time to Take 5: Respite at Home addresses the growing role of caregiving youth in the military-connected community and offers resources to provide at home support to these hidden helpers.

Designed from focus groups and feedback from wounded Veteran families, Life Tools for MilKids launched last year with the first video 15 Things Military and Veteran Kids Want You To Know to create awareness about the unique challenges faced by military kids. This new video focuses on helping children develop positive coping skills  and equipping them with tools to help them manage their role as hidden helpers.

According to a White House report,  about 2.3 million American children take on crucial caregiving roles in their military-connected families. Additionally, in a recent survey of Camp Corral parents, 70% shared that their child performs at least one caregiving duty for their family. This data suggests the importance of acknowledging the challenging reality youth caregivers face.

“Children of wounded, ill, and fallen military service members and veterans often take on additional roles within the household. As school starts, it is vital to give these children a chance to catch their breath and find time to relax,” explains Sheri Oberhelman, Development and Outreach Director at Camp Corral.

“PsychArmor is honored to continue educating parents and families on the uniqueness of youth caregivers and how to best support them through the Time to Take 5: Respite at Home course,” says Jenna Pryor, PsychArmor’s Director of Programs.

DAV, a nonprofit organization with more than 1 million members, was founded in 1920 and chartered by the US Congress in 1932. Learn more at dav.org.
