The Cost of Caring is narrated by Navy Veteran and clinical psychologist Dr. Heidi Kraft, who draws from military and clinical experience in her discussion of compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma through the use of storytelling. This course aims to provide a deeper understanding of the effects of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue on health professionals, especially those working with patients who have suffered traumatic experiences. Dr. Kraft discusses the concept of shared trauma and how it relates to medical and mental health care of service members and Veterans. Finally, she describes strategies for self-care that can be used by providers working with patients who have experienced trauma, and how compassion fatigue can turn into compassion satisfaction.
