COURSE OVERVIEW

Trauma and PTSD in Veterans is designed to introduce some of the very specific presentations of trauma and post-trauma symptomatology in military veterans.  In this 3-CME hour course, physicians will review the diagnostic criteria for PTSD and learn some specific types of trauma unique to combat and other military situations.  They will discuss symptom presentation and some of the common co-occurring disorders physicians may have to differentiate.  An introduction to treatment and referral options is discussed.  Physicians will explore inner conflict as a specific type of combat trauma presentation in Veterans, and discuss how this type of trauma can complicate diagnosis and treatment.  The course will discuss several different combat and military situations where inner conflict might occur, including the complicated presentation of survivors’ guilt.  Finally, physicians will be exposed to the unique trauma presentation seen in military sexual trauma.  VA definitions are discussed, specific symptomatology and comorbidities discussed, and treatment considerations and referrals recommended.

  • List the four categories of symptoms required for diagnosis of PTSD
  • Describe the new category of symptoms in DSM-V and how this impacts the diagnosis
  • Recognize and define the four different types of trauma
  • Identify three different military specific situations that could result in someone experiencing inner conflict
  • Describe two evidence based treatments used to treat PTSD and inner conflict
  • Compare and contrast the feelings, emotions, and behaviors associated with inner conflict and survivor’s guilt
  • Describe and define the definition of Military Sexual Trauma
  • Utilize the VA's Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator and understand how to connect a veteran to the MST Coordinator
  • Recognize the common signs and symptoms of military sexual trauma
  • Assess and screen clients for military sexual trauma
