COURSE OVERVIEW

Throughout this course, you will explore the presence of substance use in military and Veteran populations, including alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription drug misuse, as well as nicotine. In addition, learners will gain an understanding of the co-occurring issues and the barriers to treatment of substance abuse within these populations.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is intended for social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, counselors, and other mental health professionals providing care for Service members and Veterans.

OUTCOMES & OBJECTIVES

 

  • Discuss the signs and symptoms of alcohol use, illicit drug use, prescription and nicotine use in military and Veteran populations
  • Assess for common co-occurring issues that exist within the Veteran and military population
  • Recognize the barriers to seeking treatment and why Veterans are reluctant to seek treatment 
  • Utilize and discuss two strategies and resources that can effectively help Veterans overcome barriers to treatment

  • Conclusion and additional resources (5 Minutes)
